K-12 Outreach

Introducing STEM to students at a young age is crucial for sparking curiosity and creating pathways for underrepresented groups to access the tools and knowledge necessary for future success. By focusing on K-12 outreach, I aim to break down barriers to STEM education and promote diversity in the field. These efforts ensure that all students, regardless of background, have the opportunity to engage with science and technology in meaningful and inspiring ways.

  • Science ATL Partnership: I am currently collaborating with Science ATL and working directly with McNair Middle School to develop teaching materials focused on data science for grades K-8. The initiative’s mission is to inspire curiosity in students while ensuring that underrepresented groups gain access to the educational resources and tools that are critical to succeeding in STEM fields. By providing interactive and engaging curricula, we aim to break down barriers and make STEM careers more visible and attainable for all.

Undergraduate Research Mentorship

Mentorship plays a critical role in helping students transition from theoretical learning to hands-on research experience, especially in STEM fields. I am motivated to mentor undergraduate students to ensure that they have the tools and support needed to pursue research confidently. By guiding students through the research process, I aim to help them develop skills that are essential for success in academia and industry.

  • Emory Honor Thesis Program: Mentoring two undergraduate students through the process of formulating research questions, conducting literature reviews, and presenting their findings in a scholarly format.
  • Emory Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SIRE) Program: Through the SIRE program, I provide mentorship to undergraduates interested in data science and machine learning. I help them gain practical experience through hands-on projects.
  • Emory Data Science Club: As a faculty advisor, I provide guidance to students interested in data science, helping them explore the field and develop their skills.
  • Google ExploreCSR Program: I mentored historically underrepresented students in computing fields during this program. The program is designed to foster a sense of belonging among these students, providing them with resources, mentorship, and a network of peers to help them succeed in STEM.
  • KDD Undergraduate Consortium: I provided guidance to undergraduate students who are pursuing careers in data science, helping them navigate the challenges of research and career development.

Professional Development and Continued Learning

Providing opportunities for continued professional development is essential in helping students, researchers, and professionals stay at the forefront of their fields. My motivation in this area is to equip participants with the necessary tools and skills to thrive in data-driven industries, and to contribute to the ongoing development of emerging fields such as epidemiology and data mining.

  • Summer Institute in Statistics and Modeling in Infectious Diseases (SISMID): I contribute to summer sessions targeting undergraduates, graduate students, CDC officials, and industry practitioners, offering training in statistical modeling and data analysis for epidemiology.
  • Conference Tutorials (KDD, AAAI, SDM): I actively organize and lead tutorials at major conferences, sharing insights into data science methodologies for both academic and industry audiences.
  • Women in KDD Workshop 2022: I supported the Women in KDD workshop by volunteering to help coordinate and monitor sessions, fostering an inclusive environment for women in data science.
