Accessing Computing Resources from a Remote Location outside Emory campus

• Before you even begin: Emory VPN and off-campus access to computing resources in Emory
  • Emory has installed firewall software on its main access router which will prevent unwanted access (i.e., hacking) from off-campus computers to campus computing resources

  • If you live off campus and want to connect to a MathCS lab machine to do your projects, you will not be able to due to Emory's firewall

    Note:

    If you are on campus, you do not need to use Emory VPN to connect to a MathCS lab machine !!! Please skip this section !!! Note: The Clairmont campus is considered as part of the Emory campus !!! You are on EmoryUnplugged and will not need to use VPN !!!

  • In order to gain access to the computers on Emory campus (including those in MathCS) to do your homework/projects, you must use Emory's VPN

  • IF you live off-campus, you must first do the following to install Empry VPN:

    Call the LITS Helpdesk at 404-727-7777 and request access to the Emory VPN for your Emory NetID. Follow the instructions on this webpage to prepare your laptop to use Emory VPN: http://it.emory.edu/security/vpn.html

    Warning:

    The remote login software will not work if you do not install Emory's VPN on your PC !!! (You will be considered as a hacker by Emory's firewall)

  • Linux PC: (very easy - you have all the necessary software already)

    To remote login to a workstation in the MathCS lab, use ssh: ssh -X -l yourNetID lab0z.mathcs.emory.edu The transfer files between your Linux PC and MathCS, use secure ftp: sftp lab0z.mathcs.emory.edu Further instructions on how to use sftp can be found in this write up (I wrote it for Mac users): click here

• Extremely important warning
  • Very important:

    Do not use lab0z.mathcs.emory.edu to work on homework/projects !!!!!!!!! The lab0z.mathcs.emory.edu is only used as a login server

  • After login to lab0z.mathcs.emory.edu, you must ssh to a lab machine using this command (on lab0z.mathcs.emory.edu):

    ssh -X labAB where: A = one of the digits 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 B = one of the letters a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h e.g.: ssh -X lab3d

    You will need to login again !!!

    After you login to a lab machine (such as lab3d above), you can do your homework/project
