BMI PhD candidate co-authors papers with the International Immuno-Oncology Biomarker Working Group
news Published Date: 2020-05-12
Machine learning tools are increasingly gaining attention for use in diagnostic medical applications, but there are barriers in translating research success to meet clinical standards. Mohamed Amgad, BMI PhD candidate who also has an MD, has published three papers in npj Breast Cancer. The papers are co-authored by the International Immuno-Oncology Biomarker Working Group, a large international group that "develop[s], in a timely manner, standards on the assessment of Immuno-Oncology Biomarkers to aid pathologists, clinicians and researchers in their research and daily practice." One of the papers provides guidance on the computational assessment of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, a visual pattern that typically indicates improved survival prospects and favorable response to therapy in breast cancer. Various computational, medical and regulatory aspects are explored in the article, along with steps to translate advances in computer vision into the diagnostic medical practice.
